Targeted intervention project

Meera Sansthan a name known for its activities in the field of woman and child development.

The organization has its headquartered in Jodhpur.  The organization works to create a society with gender equality, child development, economic and social equity.

The organization is working on trainings, capacity building, health education and awareness and building institutionalization action aspects of the society ever since its inception in 1976.
The urgency of focus required can be attributed to the high degree of prevalence found. The HIV prevalence among the general population was recorded 0.17% in the year 2012 (PPTCT, 2012). However, the prevalence of HIV has been observed low among high-risk males i.e. 3.49% (ICTC walk-in males, 2012) and moderate among high-risk females i.e. 6.13% among (ICTC walk-in females, 2012).

Organization

is implementing Targeted Intervention Project since January, 2009 with the target group of MSM (Male having sex with male) and FSW(Female Sex Worker),TG (Transgender) has made sincere efforts to enhance the knowledge level of modes of HIV transmission, treatment seeking behavior by eradicating the myths and misconceptions, to change in the attitude of MSM and FSW on issues such as condom use, risk perception and changes in behaviors of HRG on seeking health care from qualified doctors and using condoms consistently. The HRGs are being neglected by the society and we have made genuine efforts to bring them in to streamline. TI has tried to do linkages with available government health for the community. Udaipur district comprises of variety of societal structures, such as: Tribal Community, Rural and Urban people which is applicable to HRGs also. HRGs are reluctant to come out of social norms to accept that they are sex workers or MSMs. Different types of strategy has been applied to work the HRGs of each segment. From our previous experience we found that the MSMs are having more prevalence rate of HIV.

The most recent mapping report (2009) reveals the presence of the HRGs across Udaipur district. The estimated number of FSWs and MSMs in the district are, 1,030 and 1,128 respectively. FSW were identified and estimated in 13 sites, whereas MSMs were identified and estimated in 15 sites. The current TI program in the district reached 29% of FSWs and 63% of MSMs through TI. This suggests that there is a need to saturate the programme with core population.

The ICTC and PPTCT data shows that 6,652 were found HIV positive out of 230371 individuals who have undergone HIV testing in these centers. It has been found that there is a gap between detection (6,652) and pre –ART enrolment (7,707) which is much more than the detected individual. This suggests that there is need for better coordination between the ICTCs and the ART centre to bridge this gap.
